PMX: Malaysia Cannot Continue to Rely on Foreign Technology, Needs to Build Internal Capabilities

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that the country cannot continue to depend on foreign technology, but rather needs to build internal capabilities, including in the arena of sovereign cloud computing. This is very important, especially in protecting information and strategic assets of the country.

In addition, the Prime Minister also emphasized that the needs of new technologies such as artificial intelligence are addressed through a security lens. To this end, the government will continue to strengthen efforts in strengthening cyber defenses, as well as protecting the country's critical infrastructure.

The government itself has taken several steps, including offering basic education on cybersecurity to all through MCMC, in addition to offering MyDigital ID as a single identity when dealing with the government. The government will also introduce the MyGOV application which is currently in beta stage – which unites all services in one application.

Moving forward, the government will also present the Cyber Crime Bill in Parliament by the end of 2025.
