Samsung Helps Apple Produce iPhone Chips in the United States

This morning Apple reinforced its commitment to invest $600 million in the United States under the American Manufacturing Program (AMP) to restore domestic manufacturing capabilities. Apple will work with TSMC, Broadcom, Corning, Texas Instruments and Samsung in AMP and is seen as an effort to please President Trump while avoiding high import tariffs.

In the announcement released by Apple, they confirmed that they will use Samsung services to produce new technology chips that have never been seen before at Samsung's factory in Austin, Texas. Information about this chip is still vague, as Apple says it will be used in devices such as the iPhone.

Some analysts predict that it is not a processor chip but a camera sensor chip. It has been heard that Apple will produce its own camera sensor to replace the Sony sensor that has been used for a long time. The collaboration between Apple and Samsung is beneficial for both parties.

For Apple, they will fulfill Trump's request to return to manufacturing devices in the United States. For Samsung, they are receiving new customers that help their foundry business which has recorded losses after customers such as Qualcomm and Google moved to TSMC. This is another piece of good news for Samsung, which a few weeks ago won a contract to produce chips for Tesla until 2033, also in Austin, Texas.
