ChatGPT is one of the most widely used AI services around the world. The service comes in several tiers, including free and premium.
Recently, it was reported that the UK government, through its Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, has been in talks with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to discuss giving all citizens access to one of ChatGPT’s premium subscriptions, ChatGPT Plus.
The number of UK citizens registered so far is around 69.6 million, while ChatGPT Plus subscriptions are around $20 per month. This means that the government will have to spend around £2 billion (~RM11 billion) per year to fund this subscription.
In short, the conversation on this matter has not moved beyond the heated chat phase between the two parties due to the prohibitive subscription costs. However, the UK government has also recently signed an agreement to use ChatGPT’s service for use by the government and the public sector of the country.
This means that there is a possibility that the use of ChatGPT will be expanded to various other sectors such as education, defense, judiciary and so on.
