The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are among the most widely recognized and prestigious awards. Two years ago, Tan Michelle Yeoh became the first non-white woman and Malaysian actress to win the Oscar for Best Actress. Because of her status, YouTube is interested in obtaining the broadcasting rights, according to a Bloomberg report.
The Oscars broadcasting rights have been held by ABC since 1976, with the contract held by the Disney subsidiary ending in 2028. In addition to YouTube, NBC is also interested in obtaining the broadcasting rights after ABC's contract expires.
As the world's number one video streaming platform, the Oscars broadcasting rights will further strengthen YouTube's status. Netflix currently holds the broadcasting rights to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards while Paramount+ holds the rights to the Golden Globes.
