Google Says Users Now Prefer Contextual AI-Powered Summary Over Web Links

Google was recently sued by content publishers, claiming that the use of AI Overviews on search pages is negatively impacting their traffic. Following this, Google has now also provided a comment on the matter.

According to Google, they will continue to maintain a search results ecosystem that displays links to content publisher websites around the world. There are some users who love it, but in terms of recent demand, Google says that this has changed.

Users now prefer contextual summaries or answers, rather than seeing search results with 10 links. Google displays a short summary at the top of the search results, making it easier for users to understand or get answers related to a matter – and click on the link if they want a more detailed answer.

Similar offers are also offered by ChatGPT and several other providers. Google itself is currently in the process of introducing a new search mode, called AI Mode, on their main search page.

With the shift in usage methods, Google is also adjusting their offerings. However, Google emphasizes that they will continue to display links below search results as before, while ensuring a healthy ecosystem.
