The Ministry of Communications has now shared that three social media and internet messaging companies have registered licenses under the MCMC so far, namely TikTok, WeChat and Telegram Messenger. The latest data on this registration is as of August 31, 2025.
It is said that the MCMC is still in discussions with Meta, which runs Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp, in addition to also discussing with Google, which operates YouTube. Previously, Google has said that YouTube is not subject to the definition of what is said to be social media, while X said that it has not reached the 8 million users in Malaysia that require the registration of the license.
Roughly speaking, platforms from the west are not seen to have registered licenses for operations in Malaysia at this time. Previously, the government has ordered social platforms to register in Malaysia in an effort to make the platforms more responsible in the content displayed through the platforms, and to combat various scams and fraud on their respective platforms.
