The National Energy Transition Roadmap is an energy transition project introduced in mid-2023 as a roadmap for Malaysia to ensure that 70 percent of its electricity generation capacity is from sustainable energy sources by 2050.
During the tabling of Budget 2026, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the NETR project will continue to be driven by industry players, and will receive financial support with a fund worth RM150 million.
Not only that, large-scale solar generation projects are being implemented with a capacity of almost 2 gigawatts under the LSS 6 program involving an estimated private investment of RM6 billion. Other GLIC companies are also mobilizing investments worth RM16.5 billion for 2026.
UEM Lestra will develop solar farms in Segamat, Melaka and Selangor, and will collaborate with highway company PLUS to expand the offering of electric car charging facilities.
The photovoltaic solar infrastructure installed at the Malaysian Parliament building, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Wisma Pertahanan and the Malaysian Armed Forces camps has also resulted in a cumulative capacity of 7.8 megawatts to date, and has saved electricity bills by up to 42 percent, where it is said that the Parliament building alone has generated savings of 22 percent.
The Net Energy Monitoring (NEM) program, which is responsible for opening up the people to the benefits of installing solar energy infrastructure in Malaysia, has ended on 25 June 2025, and will be replaced by a new plan called the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) which will continue the previous NEM program.
Solar ATAP also opens up opportunities for consumers to contribute to increasing renewable energy generation through solar installations with a capacity of up to 500 megawatts.
