Microsoft launched the Portrait feature in Copilot today in an effort to make conversations with the core chatbot more natural and human-like. A total of 40 avatars can be selected as Copilot's face by users. This is a continuation of the Copilot Appearances feature announced three months ago which used cartoon character avatars.
The feature is only accessible to users aged 18 and over in the US, UK, and Canada. There are usage limits for each session and daily so that users are aware that they are interacting with a Chatbot avatar and not a real person.
The use of avatars as Chatbot faces has already been offered by Character.AI and Grok. The implementations carried out by these two platforms have been criticized because the characters given are allowed to have sexual conversations.
There have been several cases of human users falling in love with an AI chatbot to the point of wanting to marry it. Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing a lawsuit because the chatbot was found to be encouraging teenage users to commit suicide because there was no security system to prevent it from happening.
