Facebook has now announced that they will be ending Messenger apps for Windows and Mac in December 2025. This change is only on desktop, while users on mobile devices or the web will not experience any changes.
The reason for this termination was not stated, but it is possible that its low user numbers may make the development costs for it not worth it on Facebook's part. After support for it is ended, all users who open the Messenger app on desktop will be taken to the Facebook desktop app.
Messenger is one of the brands under Meta that focuses on messaging, in addition to also offering WhatsApp and recently also focusing on messaging features through Threads. For yourself, are you actively using Messenger?
