News about the use of nuclear energy as a clean and cheap source of energy has been talked about for years, but with a number of announcements made throughout the year, it seems that the use of nuclear energy in Malaysia is a certainty, if what Tenaga Nasional is saying is true.
The Edge reported that Tenaga Malaysia has expressed its intention to become the developer, owner and supervisor of a nuclear power plant, saying that the first nuclear power plant is expected to be operational within the next six years. It is also expected that Malaysia’s nuclear power plants will produce 3GW of electricity by 2034.
Tenaga Nasional also said that several locations have been identified as suitable sites for the power plant, but did not elaborate on where these locations are.
Nuclear power plants are usually built in areas with large water reservoirs such as lakes and rivers as a main component in cooling the heat generated by such plants.
The development of nuclear power plants is one of the steps the government wants to take now to ensure that they can achieve their ambition of no longer using coal-fired plants as one of the national power supplies by 2044. Currently, 90 percent of the local electricity supply uses unsustainable sources such as fossil fuels, coal, crude oil and natural gas.
With data center projects increasingly being developed across the country, the transition to the use of nuclear energy is seen as one of the best ways to ensure that all business sectors and citizens can enjoy its use equally.
