OpenAI and AMD today announced a 5-year strategic partnership, involving the use of infrastructure that will power OpenAI’s offerings. Under this partnership, OpenAI will utilize 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, with the first gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs expected to be deployed as early as the second half of 2026.
This is also seen in line with the high computing power required by artificial intelligence companies, in line with the development of artificial intelligence models and the increasing capacity of daily use.
Under this partnership, AMD is also offering 160 million shares to OpenAI that mature upon reaching each phase of the use of AMD’s offerings. This indirectly gives OpenAI room to acquire up to 10% stake in AMD.
However, the full partnership agreement is not disclosed, and it is still tied to and dependent on the increase in AMD’s stock value. AMD itself is expected to generate tens of billions from this partnership in terms of revenue.
