Tenaga Nasional Signs Agreement With SGCC to Strengthen Regional Electricity Grid Infrastructure

In the middle of this year, during the ASEAN summit held in Kuala Lumpur, one of the priorities given was the development of a regional electricity grid, or ASEAN Power Grid.

The ASEAN Power Grid is an ASEAN regional plan to provide power supply to all countries in the region. The first project will be located in Laos and will supply sustainable electricity to Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, and various other projects located in Vietnam, Malaysia and others will also be developed.

Yesterday, Tenaga Nasional (TNB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the world's largest public utility company through its wholly-owned subsidiary China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co., Ltd. (CET).

This collaboration aims to strengthen technological cooperation in the development of power grids and distribution networks, support the modernization of Malaysia's grid and contribute to ASEAN's broader vision of enhancing regional energy connectivity.

The collaboration focuses on three core areas: Power System Planning & Integration, Smart & Resilient Grids, and Digital Solutions & Artificial Intelligence (AI), with the aim of leveraging SGCC and CET’s expertise in the energy transition and new power systems to strengthen the operation and management of TNB’s power grid system and distribution network.

This collaboration is also part of the goals of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) which focuses on developing a more sustainable, efficient and low-carbon energy system and is in line with Malaysia’s aspiration to be a leader in the development of the ASEAN Power Grid.
