Apple Must Pay $634 Million in Compensation for Apple Watch Patent Infringement

Apple has been found guilty of infringing Masimo patents in its Apple Watch, according to a federal jury in California. Apple must pay Masimo $634 million in compensation after the jury found that it infringed on patents for blood oxygen readings, exercise modes and heart rate notification systems.

Apple has said it will appeal the decision, claiming that one of the patents it allegedly infringed on has expired and was used in patient monitoring systems for decades.

Masimo Corp. took Apple to court several years ago for infringing 25 of its patents. In some cases, the lawsuit was dismissed because the court found no patents were infringed. As a result of the lawsuit, the Apple Watch was banned from being imported into the United States by the FTC two years ago until the software was modified specifically for the country's market.
