Google and Epic Games Agree to Settle Lawsuit by Reducing Play Store Fees

Google and Epic Games sued each other five years ago after Fortnite was kicked off the Play Store for introducing an alternative payment system that bypassed Google's payment system. The court sided with Epic Games, accusing Google of monopolizing business and ordering them to open up the Play Store to third-party app store apps.

Yesterday, Google and Epic Games finally agreed to settle the issue out of court. Google will reduce the cut of fees it takes from each payment to app developers. It is currently 9% or 20% depending on the age of the app. They will also allow developers to display payment systems outside the Play Store ecosystem in their apps.

Third-party app store owners will also be allowed to register under the Registered App Store program. Users will no longer be intimidated by warning screens when trying to install third-party app stores like the Epic Games Store.
