The government will establish an Online Safety Committee as the highest monitoring body on cybersecurity issues. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said explained that this committee was established under Section 5 of the Online Safety Act 2024 (Act 866) to advise the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In addition, the committee's membership includes professionals from home and abroad, in addition to involving representatives of government agencies and stakeholders. It also plays a role in submitting proposals related to harmful content, followed by determining methods to reduce the risk to users exposed to such content. Subsequently, it will promote the best measures to hold platform providers accountable.
Azalina also announced that she will chair the first meeting of the committee. The meeting will set strategic priorities and ensure that the committee functions as an effective platform in coordinating online safety policies. Apart from that, she explained that this committee will be a channel for consultation between the government and major social media companies such as Meta, Google, TikTok and X.
