Meta Launches Feature to Detect Videos Reuploaded Without Permission on Facebook and Instagram

Freebooting is the practice of reuploading other people's videos on social media without permission and without giving credit to the creator. It is a problem that has existed since the early days of the internet and still occurs today. To solve the issue of freebooting on their platform, Meta announced a Content Protection feature that detects videos uploaded to Facebook and Instagram without the original owner's permission.

Users are given the option to participate in Content Protection when uploading reels to Facebook. After that, Meta will detect if the same video is uploaded by another account. As a copyright holder, you can do three things when a video has been the victim of freebooting.

The first is the Track option, which places a credit link to the original video producer. The second option is Block, which prevents these illegally uploaded videos from being watched on Facebook and Instagram. The third option is Release, which allows the video to continue to be displayed on other accounts and stops tracking

Content Protection also has a feature that gives permission to other accounts to upload the original video, with this permission being revoked at any time.

The feature has been enabled for Facebook Content Monetization program participants with content management accessed through the Rights Manager view.
