Studio Ghibli, Square Enix and Shueisha Also Ask OpenAI Sora Not to Infringe Intellectual Property

After OpenAI Sora was launched a few weeks ago, social media was flooded with artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos that clearly infringed on intellectual property (IP) holders. Among the videos produced were Mario as a drug dealer and Sonic as a thief. Last week, the Overseas Content Distribution Association (CODA), which represents 36 Japanese companies, asked OpenAI to no longer allow Sora to generate videos containing their IP.

Among CODA members are Studio Ghibli, Square Enix, Toei Animation, Kadokawa, Shueisha Inc, and Bandai. Sora's generation that features their IP clearly violates the law. Therefore, a letter has been sent to OpenAI to ensure that content belonging to CODA members can no longer be generated by Sora from now on. This is in compliance with OpenAI's own instructions that said IP owners must request that their IP not be generated.

Two weeks ago, the Japanese government sent a request to OpenAI to not infringe on the copyrights of these companies, including anime and manga. But because the request was not sent by the IP holder themselves, this request was ignored by OpenAI.
