Adam Mosseri Explains Why Instagram's Navigation Bar Has Changed

Instagram has changed the position of the navigation bar at the bottom of the application. Many users find this change quite disturbing because they are used to the old arrangement, especially when the Stories button is moved to the top. This matter also received attention from Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, who appeared to explain it through a short video yesterday.

He explained that the new arrangement now consists of Home, Reels, DMs, Search and Profile. This change was made because Reels and DMs are the most used features, thus driving growth and increasing interaction between users. Mosseri also emphasized that Instagram needs to constantly evolve to remain relevant, although changes like this can cause discomfort for some users.

He also recalled the history of the application's navigation. Over the course of 15 years, the arrangement has rarely changed except in 2022 when the Reels and Shop tabs were added. However, the Shop tab was eventually removed due to lack of response from users.

In addition, Mosseri emphasized that the decision to change the navigation was made with great care and only when absolutely necessary. The main goal is to make Reels and DMs easier to access as users are now spending more time watching videos, and communicating via messages, than sharing on Feed or Stories.

Mosseri’s video explaining the change has received over 29,000 likes as of this writing. What about you? Do you use Reels and DMs more often than Feed or Stories, making this change more sensible?
