Apple Replaces Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy

Apple announced a shake-up in the company's leadership with John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy at Apple stepping down and retiring in 2026. His duties will be taken over by Amar Subramanya, who previously served as Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft and spent more than a decade at Google.

He will report directly to Craig Federighi and be tasked with getting Apple Intelligence back on track after experiencing various issues such as not meeting the targets set since it was announced in 2024.

Due to Apple Intelligence's unsatisfactory performance, reports have emerged that Apple will use an AI model based on Google Gemini to meet the AI needs of its devices. The systems used by Siri and Apple Intelligence at this time are seen as lagging behind those offered by Gemini and ChatGPT.

Although the use of AI, especially generative AI, is seen as abhorrent by Apple's die-hard fans, the company cannot offer this feature on its devices if it wants to remain competitive. Sir Jony Ive and Sam Altman have now tested the prototype of OpenAI's first AI device, which is rumored to be anti-iPhone and is designed to solve the current issue of device addiction. It will also be competed with smart glasses, which are now increasingly popular because they only need to be controlled by voice.
