Artificial intelligence (AI) has a bad reputation as a generator of garbage content on social media, has driven up the cost of memory chips and now uses more water than bottled water is consumed in a year. But the unspoken bright side of AI is how it is being used to drive scientific research, detect cancer earlier and accurately predict floods and hurricanes before they happen.
To boost the use of AI in scientific research in the United States, the US Department of Energy (DoE) announced the Genesis Mission. Through it, the United States will leverage advanced AI for science, dramatically increasing the productivity of American scientists and researchers.
The Genesis Mission will help American scientists automate experimental design, accelerate simulations and generate predictive models that will lead to breakthroughs in energy, manufacturing, drug discovery and more.
The DoE has signed memorandums of understanding with 24 entities in the country to support the Genesis Mission, including Google, OpenAI, AWS, Anthropic, Microsoft, NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.
