Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, has officially become the world's most populous city, overtaking Tokyo. According to the World Urbanization Prospects 2025 report published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs this month, Jakarta has a population of 42 million.
In second place is Dhaka, Bangladesh, with 37 million people, with megalopolis Tokyo now in third place with 33 million people. This means that more people live in Jakarta and Dhaka than in the whole of Malaysia, which has a population of 34.2 million. Kuala Lumpur is currently the 41st most populous city in the world.
Dhaka will overtake Jakarta as the most populous city, while Tokyo will fall to 7th place with 31 million people by 2050. By 2050, Kuala Lumpur will also be a megalopolis with a population of almost 11 million.
