China Has Nearly 20 Million EV Charging Points – World’s Largest Network

Last year BYD officially overtook Tesla as the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. This was BYD’s best revenge after Elon Musk laughed off BYD’s early EV efforts, which he said were poor compared to Tesla’s products. There are many theories as to why China could dominate the global EV market in less than two decades. One of them is the support of the Chinese government itself to ensure high EV adoption domestically first.

At the end of 2025, China’s State Energy Administration released the latest data showing that by the end of 2025, their country now had 19.322 million charging points. Of these, 4.625 million were public chargers and another 14.697 million were private chargers. China managed to increase the number of chargers by 52% in a year, supporting an average of 45.34 KW of charging.

Not only does China have the world’s largest EV charging network, it also has the world’s second highest density of public chargers with a ratio of 9 EVs to 1 public charger. The Netherlands is first with a ratio of 5 EVs to 1 public charger.

While the United States is responsible for popularizing EV use through Tesla, it has a ratio of 31 EVs to 1 public charger. By the end of 2025, the United States will have around 230,000 public chargers nationwide, which is the second highest after China.

What about Malaysia? According to data shared by the Energy Commission, Malaysia will have 5,360 public chargers by the end of 2025. This is far from the previously targeted target of 10,000 public chargers by the end of 2025. In Malaysia, there are 113,585 EVs, giving a ratio of 21.19 EVs to 1 public charger in Malaysia, which is better than the United States!
