MCMC Begins Enforcement of Online Safety Act (ONSA) Starting Today

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission today began enforcement of the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA). This move is in line with efforts to continue to improve online safety, while at the same time protecting users, especially children.

Under this act, platforms and licensed service providers will be responsible for dealing with harmful content on their respective platforms. MCMC also emphasized that this act only applies to service providers and does not apply to individual users.

In line with this move, MCMC is now also enforcing the “deeming” provision, thus making all social media platforms with 8 million users and above subject to ONSA. Previously, several social media platforms have registered and obtained operating licenses in Malaysia, but several platforms have not obtained licenses and respected the local provisions set.

With this new move, we all hope that a healthy and safe digital environment can be created, especially for children.
