Due to the Adpocalypse in 2017, YouTube updated its guidelines for video content that can generate advertising revenue through their platform. Videos that touch on topics labeled controversial cannot generate revenue, causing channels to be shut down or creators to use the alternative terms “unalived” and “grape” when trying to discuss sensitive topics.
Last weekend, YouTube updated its guidelines to allow videos on controversial issues to generate revenue as long as they are dramatized and do not discuss them in detail. Murder cases, for example, can be told but do not show pictures of the victim or how the crime was committed in detail.
However, content that touches on topics such as child abuse or eating disorders such as anorexia, for example, is still not allowed to generate revenue through advertising.
