Bithumb is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea. Recently, the exchange made a huge mistake where they gave the platform’s users 620 thousand Bitcoins which is equivalent to about $40 billion, which is equivalent to 2000 Bitcoins for each user.
The mistake occurred due to a promotion on Bithumb, where they wanted to give away 2000 Won worth of cryptocurrency to their users, but mistakenly sent 2000 Bitcoins to the users, which is worth $40 billion.
This happened at the end of last week, and Bithumb said that they have recovered 99.7 percent of the Bitcoins that were mistakenly sent to the platform’s users.
The incident has led South Korean financial authorities such as the Financial Services Commission to discuss the security issues of platforms like Bithumb, and will ensure that exchanges like them and other financial platforms ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
