In late 2025, the US government introduced GenAI.mil, a website where the US military (Department) can use AI chatbots for a variety of purposes. When it launches, they can use AI chatbots from xAI (Grok) and Google (Gemini) for a variety of purposes.
Recently, it was reported that OpenAI has also joined GenAI.mil with the ChatGPT chatbot also added as an option on the website. OpenAI seems to agree that the DoW can use ChatGPT for this purpose.
Interestingly, these three AI chatbots can be used by the DoW without any limits or restrictions, and according to them, the website can be accessed by 3 million US military members with 1.1 million unique users per month, and can be used for a variety of purposes, similar to what the regular consumer version offers, only with a US military context, including:
Summarize and analyze policy and guidance documents
Draft and review materials procurement and contracting
Generate internal reports and compliance checklists
Support a variety of research, planning, mission support, and administrative workflows
OpenAI says the DoW is using a customized version of ChatGPT that is approved for non-classified tasks. The system runs on a government-authorized cloud infrastructure with built-in security controls and protections for highly sensitive Department data, giving the team secure access to generative AI and more.
