The physical media market is shrinking due to the popularity of cloud storage and streaming. As a result, last year Sony stopped producing Blu-Ray discs, MiniDiscs, MD Data and MiniDV tapes. This year they stopped offering Blu-Ray recorders due to lack of demand from the market. With this, Sony follows in the footsteps of Pioneer and LG who have stopped offering Blu-Ray recorder drives.
Two Blu-Ray recorder models BDZ-ZW1900 and BDZ-FBT4200/FBT2200/FBW2200 are being discontinued this month with no replacement models being offered to the market. Despite having stopped production of Blu-Ray recorders, Sony is still continuing to produce Blu-Ray players at this time. This is likely because they are still needed to support existing discs along with the PlayStation 5 console which has a Blu-Ray drive accessory sold separately,
