Operational security (OPSEC) is a guideline that military personnel must follow while on duty. Failure to comply with OPSEC can cause locations to be detected and then members to be attacked as happened in Ukraine. Because of the enthusiasm for sharing TikTok videos, operational secrets were exposed and the headquarters was attacked by artillery as happened in Ukraine. Recently, the United States Air Force (USAF) banned the use of smart glasses and Bluetooth devices on members who are on duty.
The use of smart glasses that can record photos, videos and have artificial intelligence (Ai) is prohibited because they do not want operational secrets to be revealed. The recorded videos or images may be hacked so that they can be accessed by the enemy.
Meanwhile, the use of Bluetooth headphones and earphones is only allowed after receiving official permission. This may be closely related to reports that millions of Bluetooth accessories that support Google Fast Pair have vulnerabilities so that the microphone can be accessed without being noticed for spying purposes.
The US military has already banned the use of DJI drones and watches with GPS that reveal the location of markers in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, in Israel, military personnel are banned from using Android devices because the system is said to be not as good as the iPhone. However, AR glasses and headsets for military use are being developed by Anduril in collaboration with Meta.
