Vietnam Begins Construction of World’s Largest Stadium

Last week we reported on the world’s longest, tallest and fastest roller coaster opening in Saudi Arabia. This week we shift our focus closer to Southeast Asia as Vietnam has begun construction of the world’s largest football stadium.

The Trong Dong Stadium is being built in Hanoi with a capacity of 135,000 seats. When completed, it will overtake the 114,000-seat Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea. In comparison, the largest Bukit Jalil Stadium in Malaysia only seats 87,500 for football matches.

The Trong Dong Stadium takes its inspiration from the Dong Son civilization gongs that you may remember from your PMR history class some time ago. It will have a removable pitch for better growth and will have the world’s largest retractable roof. The total area of the project is around 91 million km  and the construction will cost VND 925 trillion (~RM 140 billion).

The stadium is expected to be completed by 2028 with the surrounding area by 2035 with the project being implemented by Vingroup.
