When entering the airport, bags will be scanned using an X-ray machine to see if they contain dangerous weapons or prohibited materials. If there is a bomb, it can be detonated, killing passengers and the team conducting the inspection.
The ability to see what is hidden from a distance is fiction in movies like Eraser and is one of the powers possessed by Superman. But the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is now starting a project for an X-ray system that can see from a distance of 1 kilometer.
The contract for the development of the X-ray Extreme-Range Non-Imaging Analysis (XENA) program has been awarded to RTX BBN Technologies to realize it. XENA will collect X-ray scanning signals from long-range targets before using mathematical models and advanced image analysis software to produce clear long-range scanning images.
DARPA wants to use XENA on the battlefield so that American soldiers can detect threats such as trucks containing explosives or enemy soldiers hiding in advance.
