Anthropic Answers Why They Don't Want Their AI Technology Used for Military Purposes

Last week, we reported that artificial intelligence technology developer Anthropic has rejected orders from the Pentagon and the US Department of War to allow the military to use its Claude AI technology without any restrictions.

After several warnings, the agency announced that Anthropic is now listed as a risky entity to the US military technology supply chain due to their refusal to comply with the Department of War's orders.

Recently, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, was interviewed by CBS news network about the issue, and answered why they firmly do not want the country's military to be given unlimited control over Claude's artificial intelligence model.

Among the reasons given was that the three-day period given for any agreement to be reached was too short. The DoW was also seen to have slightly changed the text of the agreement to allow it to use the "national security" excuse to allow them to use Claude for purposes other than military purposes, including mass surveillance of the US population.

The DoW also wants to develop warfare technology that does not require any input and instructions from human users. Amodei said that so far, no artificial intelligence technology is good enough to ensure that the weapons that will be developed will not make any mistakes.

In the meantime, if any mistakes are made, no individual is seen as responsible for these incidents, and from a humanitarian perspective, this is a discussion that needs to be had by various parties, including the US Congress and its citizens.

Anthropic was previously seen as having a contract with the DoW, but because Anthropic did not want their technology to be misused, not only was the contract cancelled, other companies that had contracts with the DoW are also now not allowed to use Anthropic's AI technology for any purpose.

After the Anthropic contract was cancelled, OpenAI reportedly took over the military contract, but interestingly, the Pentagon's Central Command (CENTCOM) is still using Anthropic's technology to carry out attacks on Iran.
