Anthropic Sues US Government Over Blacklisting

Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon after the company was placed on a national security blacklist that barred it from operating with domestic entities.

The Pentagon classified Anthropic as posing a risk to the supply chain after it refused to allow its artificial intelligence (AI) to be used for spying on US citizens and targeting weapons systems without human intervention. Despite being officially banned, Claude was used in an attack on Iran two weeks ago.

The lawsuit was filed because the government's actions were allegedly illegal, violated freedom of speech rights and did not go through due process before punishing the company. After Anthropic was blacklisted, military companies such as Lockheed Martin announced that they would stop using Claude.

Despite being blacklisted, Anthropic's decision to not budge from its original decision received support from employees at Google, OpenAI and DeepMind. In the United States, the use of the Claude app increased and ChatGPT was boycotted because OpenAI did not agree to cooperate with the Pentagon. As a result, OpenAI's head of hardware development resigned yesterday in disagreement with the company's actions.
