Since iOS 17, iPhone users have been able to share files and personal information using the NameDrop feature. Two iPhones just need to touch and the file will be sent without having to open the AirDrop screen first. Android Authority reports that the same feature will come to Android as it is being developed by Samsung and Google.
This feature has been spotted since November last year under the name Gesture Exchange. Now the new Tap to Share feature has been found in One UI 9 and the latest Android Canary build. It allows file transfers to be done by touching two nearby Android devices. It is very likely that the Tap to Share feature will be introduced through Android 17 later by using the Quick Share transmission protocol.
This opens up the possibility that one day Tap to Share and NameDrop can work with each other just like Quick Share and AirDrop can now do on the iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy S26.
