What is the next evolution of the now 14-year-old Siri virtual assistant? According to a recent report by Mark Gurman in Bloomberg, big changes will be made to Siri with iOS 27 this year.
First of all, Apple is reportedly testing a standalone Siri chatbot application rather than being built directly into the operating system. Siri will work like the ChatGPT and Claude applications. Like these two leading chatbots, Siri can interact with users via text and voice commands.
Siri will have an iMessage-like interface with past conversation history accessible and suggestions for what to discuss. It can also summarize uploaded documents, perform ratings on similar documents and perform web searches. This new capability allows it to replace Spotlight as the device's existing search system.
Dynamic Island integration will also be provided with a glowing label indicating that it is performing a search with a larger search results box displayed after the search is completed. Siri will also finally understand personal context, which has been promised since iOS 18. All of these new features are expected to be delivered before the end of 2026 and will most likely be shown off at WWDC 2026 on June 9.
