What is Pi? In school, we are only required to memorize 3.142 as its value. But for scientific use and more complex calculations, this four-digit value is not enough and mathematicians continue to increase the number of digits of Pi value every year. The world record for Pi value is currently held by StorageReview, a research company that calculated its value to 314 trillion decimal points.
The success of calculating this large number was actually done in December last year but was only confirmed in conjunction with Pi Day on March 14. To perform this calculation, StorageReview used a Dell PowerEdge R7725 browser machine equipped with two AMD EPYC chips, 1.5TB of RAM, and 40 high-capacity NVMe SSD storage. The calculation process took 110 days continuously.
The value of Pi was first calculated by the Greek mathematician Archimedes around 250 years BC. Later, a more accurate value was found by Indian and Japanese mathematicians. Although the value of Pi has now been calculated to hundreds of trillions of decimal places, NASA says a value to 15 decimal places (3.141592653589793) is more than sufficient to calculate the movement of Voyager 1, which has been passing through interstellar space since 2018.
