Project Stargate is a project to develop a network of AI data centers across the United States led by OpenAI and Oracle to develop the world's largest AI processing power capacity.
One of the data centers is their flagship data center campus located in Abilene, Texas. The data center has already been developed, but to become a flagship data center, the capacity of the server host needs to be increased, and therefore, a plan to expand the capacity has been drawn up between OpenAI, Oracle and Crusoe, a high-capacity data center and power supply company.
Previously, it was agreed that the power consumption capacity of the Abilene campus would be increased from 1.2GW to 2.0GW and 1,000 acres of land would be developed to house the powerful AI servers.
However, discussions between the three parties regarding the development of the data center campus seem to have been abandoned due to financial and payment issues, as well as OpenAI's ever-changing capacity requirements.
Because of this, while the development of the AI data center campus is still ongoing, its capacity space will not be utilized by OpenAI and Oracle for Project Stargate purposes. There are reports that a large portion of it will be taken over by Meta.
Even though the development and acquisition of the Abilene campus is canceled, the entire Project Stargate will reportedly still go ahead, with Oracle developing 4.5GW of AI processing capacity across the United States.
Is this the beginning of the bursting of the AI bubble that has plagued not only the consumer computing sector, but also other industries that rely on semiconductor chip components such as memory and storage to develop their products? Let's wait and see.
