Meta Expands Teen Accounts Feature in Malaysia with Tighter Controls for Teens

Instagram is now expanding the Teen Accounts feature in Malaysia based on the 13+ movie content rating.

In this setting, all teens under 18 will automatically be placed in the 13+ category and they cannot change the setting without parental consent. The content displayed will be equivalent to what is typically seen in 13+ rated movies with additional controls to ensure that the display of inappropriate content is minimized.

In addition, among the new features introduced is Limited Content, which is a stricter option for parents who want additional control. Through this setting, the system will filter more content and at the same time limit teen interactions such as commenting, viewing or receiving comments.

In terms of content protection, Instagram blocks the display of obscene, disturbing material and the sale of adult products such as alcohol and tobacco. It also blocks the use of foul language and content that can encourage dangerous behavior, thus ensuring a safer and more appropriate experience for teens.

In terms of account and search controls, teens are not allowed to follow accounts that frequently share inappropriate content. In fact, such accounts will not appear in searches or send messages to teens. Searches for sensitive terms such as ‘alcohol’ or ‘gore’ will also be blocked, including if misspelled.

Next, in terms of content experience and AI, any content that violates the guidelines will not be displayed in Explore, Reels, Feed, Stories, comments or private messages. In addition, Instagram’s AI has also been updated so that the answers given are in line with the 13+ rating, thus ensuring a safer and more suitable experience for teens.

The implementation of this new feature has begun to expand in Malaysia and is being done in stages. It is expected to be fully available in the coming months.
