Meta is now announcing an update to Teen Accounts that will allow parents to see topics or questions their kids have asked Meta’s AI chatbot. With this new feature, parents can access a list of topics asked in the last seven days, making it easier to monitor their teens’ AI use.
The Insights feature is also available in the Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram apps, allowing parents to examine conversation categories such as school and entertainment.
Meta is also developing a proactive warning system that will notify parents if their kids try to chat about sensitive issues such as suicide or self-harm.
This step complements existing protections, where Meta’s AI is designed to not provide inappropriate answers for teens 13 and older.
In addition, Meta is working with the Cyberbullying Research Center to provide a guide in the form of open-ended questions that parents can use as conversation starters with their kids about their experiences using AI.
At the same time, Meta is also introducing the AI Wellbeing Expert Council, an expert council consisting of mental health experts from academic institutions. The council is tasked with providing ongoing input to ensure that AI experiences for teens remain safe and age-appropriate.
Meta also stressed that all of these efforts are part of an ongoing commitment to strengthening parental oversight, which previously allowed them to set time limits and schedule breaks.
