I am a Kuala Lumpur resident and since the 90s I have wondered why the ticketing systems of Star LRT, Putra LRT, Monorail and Komuter are different. It was only after the introduction of Touch ‘n Go and the three light rail systems were placed under RapidKL that this was successfully done, and even then after several decades of operation. But strangely, the integration of all four was not integrated under My50.
Transport Minister, Anthony Loke explained that the integration of My50 between LRT, MRT, Monorail and Komuter (KTMB) is difficult due to the difference in operators, operating systems and costs. Prasarana operates the LRT, MRT and Monorail within the city network. Meanwhile. KTMB operates Komuter for longer journeys and interstate travel.
The longer travel distances increase the operating costs and make it difficult to fully integrate My50 into all rail services. Although owned by the government, Prasarana and KTMB still have to cover some of the costs to ensure the continuity of the service. So if you were wondering before why Komuter is not supported by My50, here is the answer.
