Rocket launches into space are something that has been seen happening frequently lately, but it is also one of those events that requires suitable locations to do so, where it needs to be far from populated areas, but close enough to allow various types of supplies to be sent to these locations.
Recently, during an open house event, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that the Sabah state government, together with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), is conducting a study to see if Lahad Datu is a suitable area to be used as a rocket and space launch location in the future.
“God willing, in the next few years. if there are no obstacles. Lahad Datu is the best to be used as a satellite rocket launch center from Southeast Asia.”
If approved, Lahad Datu will become one of the earliest rocket and space launch sites in Southeast Asia in the next two to three years. Lahad Datu will be visited by many tourists including space scientists and can be a catalyst for the district's economy.
He also said that many other states are lobbying to develop their rocket and spacecraft launch sites, but recent studies say that Lahad Datu is the best location to develop the launch site.
