Which TV panel offers the greatest visual quality? If you ask me, the answer is OLED. But OLED TVs are expensive and for larger panels they cost more than a car. This week Sony showed off its new Sony True RGB TV panel technology which it claims offers the most accurate colors to compete with OLED panels.
True RGB sits under the umbrella of Mini LED technology. Unlike other TV manufacturers’ Mini LED panels, True RGB uses three red, green, and blue diodes to display colors more accurately. In other TVs, only two diodes, blue and green, are used. Filters on the Mini LED screen are then used to produce the desired colors.
The result, according to Sony, is True RGB that offers color accuracy, consistent brightness (no blooming), and stable performance at various viewing angles. To make this technology possible, the distance between Sony’s LEDs is around 1 cm, with each diode measuring several hundred micrometers. Each one is controlled by a processor that ensures the colors are always accurate.
Sony has announced that its first True RGB TV will hit the market in the spring. What is certain is that with Mini LED technology, a TV with a large panel, with color accuracy as good as OLED but at a better price and higher brightness will be achieved without burn-in issues.
