Verbatim Japan and I-O Data have announced new commitments to maintain the supply of physical discs and Blu-ray drive components and hardware for the Japanese market. The commitments come as other manufacturers such as Sony have halted production of media and physical drives due to declining demand.
The commitments will ensure the supply of components for Blu-ray drives, maintain the supply of physical discs and adjust production lines to ensure that new products continue to be developed.
Demand for physical discs is declining due to the popularity of streaming and digitally purchased media. Sony, once the world's largest manufacturer of DVD players, discontinued production of Blu-Ray players this year and Blu-Ray media discs, MiniDiscs, MD Data and MiniDV tapes last year. Its PlayStation console now offers a separate optical drive.
