A few months before the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), Rockstar Games was once again the victim of a hacker attack last weekend. Rockstar confirmed that a data breach occurred via a third party, not their own internal systems. The ShinyHunters hacking group claimed responsibility and demanded a ransom, with a threat to leak the data on April 14.
Rockstar stated that only a “limited amount of company information was affected by this attack,” insisting that it did not impact their players or operations. The hackers are believed to have used stolen authentication tokens via a third-party analytics tool that connects to Rockstar’s cloud infrastructure. This was not a direct attack on Rockstar’s main servers.
While player data is safe, reports suggest that it may have involved internal financial information, marketing plans and partnership contracts. Most importantly for gamers, the attack will not affect the launch of GTA 6 after several delays.
