Earlier this year, we reported that the Ministry of Home Affairs would introduce MyKad and passports with new designs and additional security features by the middle of this year.
In the latest Bernama report, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, the Minister of Home Affairs announced that the government is preparing to introduce the MyKad identity card with these new designs and features starting this June 2026, while the implementation of the National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe) application will be introduced in September 2026.
Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said that the National Registration Department and the National Immigration Department are ready to implement both these systems, and that the departments have several plans to ensure that the latest updates for identity cards and passports can be carried out smoothly, further tightening the security of the people's identities.
Meanwhile, the National Immigration Department has begun testing the use of MyNIISe widely and it has been confirmed that the application will officially replace the MyBorderPass immigration application this September.
The introduction of this new application is part of the upgrade of the Malaysian immigration system, where MyNIISe will replace the Malaysian Immigration Integrated Management System (MyIMMs) system that was used for 20 years before.
The MyNIISe application will not only display the details of the identity card and passport, but will also be integrated with the MyBorderPass QR code function which allows Malaysians to pass and enter the Malaysian immigration gate faster.
The MyNIISe application has been introduced for smart devices on the Android and iOS platforms, but when September arrives, it is expected that the MyBorderPass application will be completely replaced by the MyNIISe application.
As we reported earlier, if you have an identity card that comes with a built-in smart chip, you can also use the identity card as usual without any problems.
