Previously, there were rumors that OpenAI would offer its first physical hardware through the OpenAI collaboration. It is believed to be a smart chain that does not have a screen and is controlled only by voice. But last month, leading analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that OpenAI is also developing its first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone, targeting a launch in 2028.
Today, Kuo said that the launch has been accelerated to H1 2027, with the target that it will increase the IPO price, which is believed to start being offered by the end of 2027. The device is believed to be powered by a MediaTek processor chip with two NPUs instead of one like all SoCs on the market today. It is also likely to be based on the Dimensity 9600, which offers flagship performance.
The chip has a flagship-class ISP dedicated to the camera to do the task of seeing and understanding what is being viewed. This is also matched with LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage to provide fast AI performance. If all goes well, OpenAI's first AI smartphone is targeting 30 million units sold throughout 2027.
