The PCIe data transfer technology standard is seen breaking the ceiling of data transfer rates all the time, and although it is currently seen that the data transfer rates using PCIe 5.0 technology with a full 16 lanes are as fast as 128GB/s, PCI-SIG, the body behind this data transfer technology has shown what may be seen in the future.
Recently, they have just shown what is possible with the latest PCIe technology standard under development, namely PCIe 8.0. The initial disclosure by PCI-SIG shows that with a maximum of 16 lanes, data transfer rates can go as fast as 1TB/s.
Even with only x8 lanes, PCIe 8.0 is seen to be able to offer data transfer speeds as high as 512GB/s, much faster than what can be offered in full with the PCIe 5.0 standard.
PCIe 8.0 is now confirmed in version 0.5, where the structure of the technology standard such as architecture, electrical flow, logic compliance and software has been set by the PCI-SIG. This means that various memory and storage chip manufacturers can start experimenting with this standard to show how they can get the best performance for their memory and storage chips.
PCI-SIG is seen to continue developing this technology, and according to them, the specification of this standard will be finalized around 2028, before it can be widely used in various IT sectors, especially for AI empowerment.
