14 years ago, Cloud Imperium Games launched its space simulation game Star Citizen on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and raised $2.3 million in funding in just one month, making it one of the highest-funded projects on the platform.
CIG then continued to fund the game on their own platform, while developing the game. 14 years later, CIG has developed the new Star Engine for the game, along with beta testing content and other games such as Arena Commander, Star Marine and The Hangar Module as games that can be played while waiting for Star Citizen to be completed.
Recently, it has been reported that Star Citizen has now surpassed $1 billion in funding, according to the Star Citizen crowdfunding site recently. Most of this funding has come through digital spaceships that CIG has been selling over the past 14 years, while Star Citizen is still in development, and is currently in an open alpha development phase where the public can download and try out what CIG is building for themselves.
It is still unknown when Star Citizen will finally be playable for backers. CIG is also reportedly developing Squadron 42, a single-player game based on the Star Citizen world, which is said to be completed this year, but it is currently unknown when this game will launch.
