Malaysia Bans Social Media for Children Under 16 Effective Today

Effective today, June 1, 2026, the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced the implementation and enforcement of the Child Protection Code (CPC) and Risk Reduction Code (RMC), banning children under 16 from using social media.

All children are no longer allowed to register new accounts on social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Social platforms must take appropriate action to enforce this, and verification processes must be implemented by relevant platforms.

For existing users under 16, the platform must conduct identification, and the relevant account must be given a period of one month to download and transfer their data including photos and videos, before the account is subject to further action such as blocking or suspension.

This step is taken to continue protecting children from various threats and concerns caused by the use of social platforms. Apart from Malaysia, among the countries that have started to take more or less the same steps are Australia and Indonesia.
