RM1 Charge Exemption Only Applies to ATMs Owned by Local Banks

The RM1 charge for withdrawing money at other bank ATMs has been abolished since July 1. Therefore, using any ATM machine operated by a local bank such as Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank and others allows you to withdraw money from other accounts without being charged additional charges. This includes an example of a situation where you have a CIMB account but make a withdrawal at a Maybank ATM.

However, it should be emphasized that this exemption only applies to ATMs operated by local banks. If you use a machine that is not operated by a bank such as an ATM at a convenience store or the like, the normal RM1 charge may still apply because it is not part of the local bank network.

An easy way to identify this is to look at the display on the machine itself. Machines operated by banks usually only display the logo and name of one bank. On the other hand, machines that are not operated by local banks usually display multiple bank logos at the same time. This way, you can distinguish whether the machine is included in the fee exemption or not.

In the same vein, if you are still charged RM1 at ATMs operated by local banks after July 1, it is recommended to file a complaint with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) so that follow-up action can be taken against the bank in question.
