Grab has agreed today to acquire a majority stake in the "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) service Atome Financial for RM6.1 billion. Through this transaction, Grab will secure a 60% stake in Atome.
This move will further strengthen Grab's position in the region's financial services sector. Atome—short for "Available To Me"—is widely used by consumers across Southeast Asia, particularly for accessing flexible installment payment options when shopping.
Atome reportedly has 25 million users across Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. Grab states that through Atome, it will gain access to an effective platform for consumer lending, while Atome will gain access to Grab's ecosystem.
Grab already offers digital banking services in Singapore and Malaysia, as well as lending and installment payment options for consumers and retailers. Previously, Grab acquired Stash Financial in the United States, invested in various autonomous driving and robotaxi technology developers, and acquired FoodPanda's operations in Taiwan.
